Haematological malignancies in Finland 2008−2014

The World Health Organization (WHO) published an updated classification of neoplasms of the haematopoietic and lymphoid tissues in 2008. The major principle of the new classification is the recognition of distinct diseases according to a combination of histology, cytology, immunophenotyping, genetic, molecular and clinical features. The updated classification enables more specific diagnosis. Also, the identification of a specific haematological malignancy helps to decide about the appropriate treatment of these patients.

The cancer statistics contain data on incidence rates of leukemias, lymphomas and other haematological malignancies,  according to year of diagnosis, sex and university hospital districts. These data are presented beginning from the year 2008.
