Reminder letters for non-participants

Attendance rates in screening can be improved by sending reminder letters (re-invitations to screening) to those women who have not taken part after the original invitation. Cancer Society of Finland and national protocols on the diagnostics and treatment of cervical cancer recommend the use of reminder letters in screening programmes.

In a study conducted in Espoo in 2008, reminder letters markedly improved the participation of cervical cancer screening from 64 to 75 percent.

All women aged 30 to 60 are entitled to free cervical cancer screening in Finland. They receive an invitation and, when needed, a reminder letter in five-year intervals, irrespectively from their use of other health services. Reminder letters are currently in use only in a few Finnish municipalities, but aim is to broaden the protocol to whole Finland.
